J.K. Rowling’s HARRY POTTER Follow-up, THE CASUAL VACANCY is Headed For HBO

It’s been a while since a J.K. Rowling adaption hit the live-action stage. While much has been placed in development since the end of the Harry Potter series, nothing’s begun production yet, but that’s all about to change, thanks to everyone’s favorite network, HBO.

The premium cable network has teamed up with the BBC to adapt Rowling’s adult-novel, The Casual Vacancy, as a three-hour mini-series, this coming months after it was originally announced the BBC was going to adapt the novel for BBC One. The adaptation will be written by Sarah Phelps (EastEnders, BBC’s Great Expectations) with Jonny Campbell (Eric & Ernie) set to direct. Rowling, Neil Blair, Paul Trijbits and Rick Senat are on board as producers. Production is scheduled to begin this summer in South West England.

For those uninitiated with the novel, according to The Hollywood Reporter, The Casual Vacancy follows “Pagford, a seemingly idyllic English village with a cobbled market square and ancient abbey. Behind its pretty facade, however, is a town at war: rich at war with the poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands and teachers at war with their students.”
